There are some trick questions that are a part of interview drill. One must be prepared to play these googlies Interviews are nerve racking. Yes? But they do not have to be. Questions may be thrown at you left, right and centre but they should not necessarily throw you off. You are going to sail through if you answer simply, honestly and with a certain degree of preparedness. There are some standard tricky questions that are asked. We are going to try and give you some pointers as to how to deal with these. Question 1. Are you applying for other jobs as well? Be honest. You cannot possibly be just applying for one job. However, do not waste too much time answering this one and do not dwell into details. Without comparing with other companies, just end with a few positive points about their company which would motivate you to work for them. Question 2. How long are you willing to work with us, if hired? You are not supposed to inform them about your life plans. Tell them what they would want to hear. Obviously, they are looking for someone who can stick around for the company. Do not be specific. Saying something like you will work as long as the company is good for you and you are good for the company would be the best way to go. Question 3. Are you a team player? And do you think you can handle conflict in a team? It is essential for your boss to know if you can work efficiently with a team and also can help your team members achieve maximum output. You can state examples from school, college or previous job where you worked in a team. Question 4. Have you ever had problems with your boss? Never go on a tirade against your boss or professor. It will make a wrong impression on your boss. Mention some genuine problems that you faced and also mention efforts put in by you to get around those conflicts. Question 5. What do your co-workers have to say about you? Quote one of your colleagues. It could be any little remark about your working style. It does not have to be something great and astonishing. Something like that you are cordial with everyone in office and are always serious about your work is enough. Question 6. Why did you leave your last job? Be careful while answering this one. You should say that you felt ready to accept more challenging tasks. Do not say anything bad about the previous company. Rather, draw on your research and show how your career goals match better with their company. Question 7. Have you been asked to leave a position? It will not do good to hide the truth. Reference checks done by your prospective employer will cancel all your chances of getting the job. Admit it but focus on how you tried to grow out of that experience. Stress on your willingness to improve yourself. Question 8. What kind of salary are you expecting? It becomes one of the most difficult questions to tackle. Avoid stating an amount first. Ask them instead about their pay scale. Do not attempt to try your luck by stating an exaggerated amount and stick to the market rates. They will only hire you if you ask for a reasonable and deserving amount. You must also take into consideration other facilities provided to you by the company apart from your salary and then weigh your options. Lastly, you should be prepared to ask them questions whether invited to do so or not. Do keep a few questions ready always. Clarify your doubts and queries so as to know if the company at all suits your abilities and objectives. This will also make you seem like an intelligent and sensible person. Good luck with your interview!

Tips to dress for positive impact *.The appropriate interview attire depends on the industry in which you’ll be interviewing, as well as the geographic location and time of year. *.Spend time on the Internet researching the company, industry and competitors to determine suitable interview outfits. *.Still not sure? Call the company’s HR department and ask what they recommend you wear. *.When in doubt, err on the side of being slightly over dressed, rather than show up looking too casual. *.Don’t have an appropriate outfit? Go to a large department store like Nordstrom or Macy’s and ask for help from a personal shopper or hire a personal stylist. *.Ensure that your clothes are cleaned and pressed. *.Avoid wearing perfume or cologne. *.Wear makeup and jewelry that are appropriate to the job/company/industry. Your clothes can influence your chances for landing a job If a man wore a dark suit to a job interview in California (or any warm climate) in August for a position as a construction worker, the hiring manager might think the man had lost his mind. Why? The attire is inappropriate not just for the position and industry, but also for the location and time of year. What if a woman wore a navy pant suit, pulled her hair into a low ponytail, wore little makeup, no jewelry and flat shoes to a job interview as a clothing stylist? It’s doubtful she would be offered the job. The hiring manager would probably be looking for someone who projects an image of creativity and wears clothing, makeup and accessories that are fashion-forward. As the old saying goes: “Perception is reality.” Think about the image you want to project during your interview and then choose an outfit that will create a positive perception and is appropriate, given the time of year, your geographic location, and the job/company/industry. ~ Lisa Quast, author of award-winning book, YOUR CAREER, YOUR WAY!

Women's Interview Attire *.Suit (navy, black or dark grey) *.The suit skirt should be long enough so you can sit down comfortably *.Coordinated blouse *.Conservative shoes *.Limited jewelry (no dangling earrings or arms full of bracelets) *.No jewelry is better than cheap jewelry *.Professional hairstyle *.Neutral pantyhose *.Light make-up and perfume *.Neatly manicured clean nails *.Portfolio or briefcase

A ball of lead 4 cm in diameter is covered with gold. If the volume of the gold and lead are equal, then the thickness of gold (given cube root 3= 1.259) is approx... Vol of LEAD = vol of GOLD d^3 = D^3 - d^3 2d^3 = D^3 ==> D^3=>2* 64 = 128 D = 5.036 , now Thickness of gold ==> D - d /2==> 5.036 - 4/2 => 0.518

How to Prepare General Studies Q. 1. How should I prepare for my GS Prelims/Mains. Ans. An extensive study is required for preparing GS Prelims. Start your preparation with ncert books of 10th standard on various subjects like History, Geography, Polity, Science etc. and then go through other books recommended for G.S. It will be better to prepare G.S. Mains first and then for Prelims. In Preliminary exam, multiple choice questions are asked and these can be answered on the basis of facts you have remembered while reading the books on various subjects. One should also try to develop the capacity of answering multiple choice questions as quickly as possible because you have only 120 minutes for answering 150 questions in exam (i.e. less than one minute for each question). This can be achieved only through rigorous practice. For G.S. Mains start your preparation with recommended books, magazines and newspapers. Here, one should be very careful about the word-limit because you have to answer the questions in limited number of words. This also can be achieved through practice. There should not be any introductory remarks while answering the questions of G.S. Mains. Try to write the answers to the point. Q. 2. Should I join some coaching Institute for my preparation of Prelims/Mains. Ans. It is very difficult to answer this question. It depends on the capacity and capability of individual.But sometimes a person having quite enough knowledge to get through the CSE fails in his attempt because he does not know how to utilize this knowledge. A little hard work in right direction can open the UPSC gate for you. A good coaching institute provides guidelines i.e. in which direction one should apply his energy of knowledge to get through in this exam. Q. 3. What about Essay preparation? Ans. For preparing Essay, one must be aware of day-to-day happenings around the world, because most of the topics asked in this paper are of current importance. Besides these traditional topics like socio-economic problems, environmental problems etc., are also asked. One should be very careful about the grammatical mistakes. Your essay should be in simple and expressive language because this reduces the chances of gramatical mistakes. One should also enrich his word power. A written practice is must for scoring higher marks in this paper. Q.4. Does the medium of expression matter for success in CSE. Ans. It is a very common question which is often asked by the candidates. There is no doubt in it that medium of expression never counts for success in CSE. One should prefer the medium in which one can express oneself satifactorily. Q. 5. It is necessary to join a coaching Institute for Interview? Ans. In fact interview is the test of your personality and not the knowledge. It is a well known fact that personality of a human being can not be developed within a week or a month. The coaching institute teaches about the basic manners, ettiquates to be followed during interview. By arranging mock interviews an institute breaks your hesitation.

Multiplication of two numbers that differ by 2 (This trick only works if you have memorized or can quickly calculate the squares of numbers.When two numbers differ by 2, their product is always the square of the number in between these numbers minus 1. Let me explain this rule by taking examples 18*20 = 19^2 - 1 = 361 - 1 = 360 25*27 = 26^2 - 1 = 676 - 1 = 675

Square of numbers near to 100Let me explain this rule by taking examples 96^2 :- First calculate 100-96, it is 4 so 96^2 = (96-4)----4^2 = 9216 similarly 106^2 :- First calculate 106-100, it is 6 so 106^2 = (106+6)----6^2 = 11236

An other case arises 110^2 = (110+10)----100 = (120+1)----00 = 12100 similarly 89^2 = (89-11)----121 = (78+1)----21 = 7921

Square of any 2 digit numberLet me explain this trick by taking examples 67^2 = [6^2][7^2]+20*6*7 = 3649+840 = 4489 similarly 25^2 = [2^2][5^2]+20*2*5 = 425+200 = 625 Take one more example 97^2 = [9^2][7^2]+20*9*7 = 8149+1260 = 9409 Here [] is not an operation, it is only a separation between initial 2 and last 2 digits

Let me explain this rule by taking examples To calculate 56×54: Multiply 5 by 5+1. So, 5*6 = 30. Write down 30. Multiply together the last digits: 6*4 = 24. Write down 24. The product of 56 and 54 is thus 3024.

Example.Understand the rule by 1 more example 78*72 = [7*(7+1)][8*2] = 5616

Multiplication of two numbers that differ by 6 (This trick only works if you have memorized or can quickly calculate the squares of numbers.If the two numbers differ by 6 then their product is the square of their average minus 9. Let me explain this rule by taking examples 10*16 = 13^2 - 9 = 160 22*28 = 25^2 - 9 = 616

Multiplication of two numbers that differ by 4 (This trick only works if you have memorized or can quickly calculate the squares of numbers.If two numbers differ by 4, then their product is the square of the number in the middle (the average of the two numbers) minus 4. Let me explain this rule by taking examples 22*26 = 24^2 - 4 = 572 98*102 = 100^2 - 4 = 9996

Course :Company Secretary (CS) Eligibility: Class 12/ Graduation Institute & Professional Council: Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) Minimum duration:2 1/2 years (after graduation), 3 1/2 years (after Class 12) Exams:Conducted in June and December every year for all three levels Fees:Rs 25,000 (including registration, examination and computer training) Website: www.icsi.edu INsome sense the Company Secretary is a like priest for the company, says Prof. T. Joseph, a visiting professor of corporate secretaryship at Alagappa University. The CS keeps the records, sets up the contours for the deliberations of board and ensures regulatory compliance with respect to all the decisions. He is the eyes and ears of the board, ensuring that the company remains within the right side of the law, concludes Prof. Joseph. A tough, but exceptionally rewarding profession. With more and more companies increasingly being listed on the stock exchange today, managements need to ensure greater transparency while adhering to high standards of responsibility. This becomes even more relevant in the light of the recent Satyam saga. “A robust system of compliance management as well as following the best global practices of corporate governance is a must for a corporate entity today. This is where the company secretary steps in,” says NK Jain, Secretary and CEO, Institute of Company Secretaries of India, ICSI. Termed as governance professionals, Company Secretaries are considered competent to provide sound advice on corporate, legal, secretarial, administrative and even tax related matters within a company. Parachute professionals A freshly recruited CS gets direct access to the who’s who including the board of directors from Day 1, while most others need to climb up the hierarchy through several years in the organisation. “Thus, company secretaries are rightly referred to as Parachute professionals”, says Pavan Kumar Vijay, Managing Director, Corporate Professionals India, a Delhi-based firm that specialises in providing complete solutions to corporate firms. The CS, the principal officer of the company, has a thorough understanding of management and law and acts as a point of communication between the board of directors and company shareholders, reporting in a timely and accurate manner on company procedure. They need to ensure the compliance of their organisation in financial and legal practices, plus issues of corporate governance. Guiding and advising the management on legal aspects of business areas like production, sales, marketing and administration is also a part of the job. Traits and work ethic Curiosity and an eagerness to understand, analyse and interpret complex and technical legal issues is a must. A general interest in economics, business and finance, is a plus. The work involves multi-tasking a lot on a daily basis, hence you must be disciplined, organised, and efficient in time management. Since new laws keep coming into effect, one needs to constantly stay updated as in any other field. An excellent command over English, both written and oral is also very important. Mix of theory and practicals The postal course is exclusively offered by the ICSI, a statutory body recognised by the Government of India to regulate the profession. Students need to clear 3 levels of examinations along with 16 months of practical training, on completion of which they are enrolled as an Associate member of the Institute and designated as Associate Company Secretary (ACS). “One needs to be disciplined and be efficient at time management to crack the exams,” says Jyoti Sachdeva, Assistant manager - Legal and Secretarial, Cybermedia India Ltd., Gurgaon. Although laws form a major chunk of the course, they are centered on managing the affairs of a company, such as company laws, economy and labour laws. Learn on the job After clearing the Executive/Professional Programme, students must undergo 15 months of practical training in a company or under a practising company secretary during which they are paid a stipend ranging from Rs. 6000-10,000 per month. They are sponsored by the institute for the same. “Prospective employers prefer candidates with good drafting skills and subject knowledge,” says Pavan Kumar Vijay, whose company employs at least 20 trainees every year. There is also a 15-day practical training with Registrar of Companies, Stock Exchange, financial or banking institutions. Although business communication is taught as a part of the course and training is conducted by the institute, some feel that there should be additional impetus on the development of communication skills, since they are crucial for the job. Governance, Business Ethics and Sustainability Vinay Khanwalkar ,President, ICSI "Our course has kept pace with the changing dynamics of the economy." Power plus responsibility The crucial role that a CS plays in a company can be gauged by the fact that the Companies Bill 2009 equates his or her position to the level of CEO and CFO of the company, which involves a huge responsibility. “Earlier the role of the CS was to conduct board meetings, check balance sheets and to monitor all secretarial works such as filing of returns and maintenance of records,” says Nitesh Kumar Jha, Company Secretary with Mohan Meakins, Mumbai. In companies where the legal and secretarial departments are separate, the role of a CS is more secretarial in nature, but today most of the companies club both the departments. A company secretary’s job profile today would typically encompass corporate restructuring, formulating corporate policies, managing public issues, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures within and outside India, to name a few. “They also act as the confidants of the board of directors and liaison with government departments,” says Ranjit Panday. They even foray into capital markets and financial services industry. The job comes with a lot of commitment to ethics since they deal with a lot of confidential information crucial to the company. “If a CS has to dispense some advice, the top management will take time out to listen, such is the credibility and reputation,” adds Rajat Sharma, CS at Vatika Group, Gurgaon. Job scope A qualified CS can either be employed by a company or can start his or her own practice. According to Section 383A, Companies Act 1956, it is mandatory for companies with a paid-up share capital of Rs. 5 crores or more to appoint a CS. Any organisation whose affairs are conducted by boards, councils or other corporate structures; companies seeking listing on stock exchange; central government law services; finance, law, accounts and merchant banking divisions of nationalised banks, as well as public sector companies would employ the services of a CS. “Listed companies, though, rank higher on priority for qualified CS’ looking for a job,” says Ranjit Pandey, a Delhi-based practitioner. Independent practitioners require a certificate from ICSI (after having qualified as a company secretary). They can then issue compliance certificates to companies (with a paid up share capital between Rs. 10 lakhs to Rs. 5 crores) and undertake diligence report for banks etc. They can also be employed by small firms on a retainership for professional advice and support on issues such as licenses, registrations, loans, taxes and partnership deeds. Opportunities exist abroad as well. The ICSI has signed an MoU with Institute of Chartered secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), UK as a part of which ICSI members with more than two years of work experience are exempted from passing 14 out of 17 papers of ICSA. Career growth and money talk Typically, the designation within an organisation is Company Secretary or Assistant Company Secretary. “Depending on the internal hierarchy of the organisation, you could start with at least Senior Executive or Assistant Manager,” elaborates Ravinder Saini, Company Secretary at Birlasoft, Delhi. With experience you can rise up to the post of Executive Director or Vice President of a company. A fresher could start with a salary of 20,000-30,000 per month. Salary packages however vary, depending on individual capabilities and the sector one is employed in, opine those in the profession. Although the regular course does not offer any specializations as such, one can specialise in corporate governance as a part of a post membership course offered by ICSI. On the job, one can specialise in SEBI laws, cyber laws, taxation etc., adds Nitesh. The future According to ICSI, close to 1.5 lakh students are enrolled with the Institute under various courses. However, since the inception of the course, the institute can only boast of a little more than 25,000 CS’ till date. Vinay Khanvalkar, President of ICSI, says, “There needs to be more awareness amongst companies on recruiting these personnel given the varied skills and knowledge they bring onto the table.” A change is already on the anvil. Small and medium enterprises are today looking at expanding their operations and employing the services of a CS. “The role of a CS is going to get more roots in the times to come with them being involved in formulating strategy sitting with the board,” concludes NK Jain. "The CS is more fearless" NK Jain, Secretary and CEO, ICSI Around 25 years back ,when Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) and Corporate governance were little known concepts, CS was more of a legal requirement. Today, a CS is part of a team, which provides solutions and adds value to the corporation. The CS is more fearless and forthright in advising the board on the gaps and roadmaps to achieve a particular target. Promoters are encouraging dissent, as opposed to earlier times when they were reluctant to accept a fault and the CS was hesitant to point it out. Companies are increasingly aware that if they are noncompliant with various rules and regulations they will have to face the legal remification
